Bomb Damage
1940
23rd September | New England - Colne Valley Arms, Bumpstead/Haverhill Road junction blocked by UXB. Military on the spot. |
25th September | Birdbrook - Land Mine exploded near Moat Farm, Finkle Green and blocked road causing slight damage. |
8th October | Birdbrook - one oil bomb, no damage |
13th October | Balloon 20ft in diameter near Steple Bumpstead Rd was taken to Halstead Police Station |
14th October | Baythorne End - eleven HEx bombs in field, ten craters plus one UXB, no casualties |
Bailey Hill Cottage being repaired after land mine damage. The only reference we can find to a land mine expolding in Finkle Green is above for 25th September, 1940, but that says it caused only slight damage! The cottage that was next door was damaged so badly that it was never repaired. Thanks to Paul and Julie Trinder for information and picture.

1943
29th September | Baythorne End - flying bomb caused extensive damage to Baythorne Hall and cottage, also minor damage to 45 Houses and Baythorne Park historic house (sic). No casualties |
